Mouthbows were used by any culture that had bows and arrows, but it was probably African slaves who brought the instrument to Appalachian music.
This recording shows how blues notes are the natural result of fooling around with this mouth resonated instrument from west Africa..... I was just playing around and the tune came floating out of the harmonics.
