From the recording Born To Be A Butterfly

What did you think you would be when you grew up? Many of us are doing something we couldn't have imagined just a few years ago.

This song is about more than that. It's about growing up to find you are different in some seemingly unimportant way.

Lyrics

When I was just a little bitty inch worm, I was taught that someday we'd all grow up and fly away.
A complete metamorphosis, that's what they called it, we all would change our caterpillar ways (complete metamorphosis means the body changes shape completely, from something like a worm to an insect shape with a head, thorax and abdomen.)

Chorus 1
Born to be a Butterfly, I was taught that I was, born to be a butterfly I thought everybody was
Born to be a butterfly, a living jewel on nature' s cloth.
Born to be a butterfly but I turned out to be a moth

I popped out of my cocoon, pumped up my wings.. Let me tell you that it’s a chore to get out of one of those things
Imagine my surprise when I opened up my compound eyes and this is what I saw… (insects have compound eyes.. that eyeball has many little lenses on it)

Chorus 2:
Born to be a butterfly, I was taught that I was born to be a butterfly, I thought everybody was
Born to be a butterfly, or at least that’s what I thought
Born to be a Butterfly but I turned out to be a moth…

I had a fuzzy stubby little body, fuzzy stubby little legs, feathery antennas and eye spots on my wings
Born to be a butterfly, or at least that’s what I thought
Born to be a butterfly but I turned out to be a moth

I tried hiding my identity, I grew a mustache, I shaved it off , but I’d stay up all night and sleep all day
Then one night those pheromones, brought their subtle message home … and now I’m proud to say.. that I was….
(pheremones are chemicals, like perfume, that moths and other insects use to attract mates)

Repeat Chorus 1
