Pachelbel and his colleagues in the late 1600's pioneered the use of the I, IV V, and VI minor... (1,4,5 and relative minor) progressions.... the mainstay of rock and roll.... and the melody of many cheesy songs including Puff the Magic Dragon.

He was a great organist and traveled here and there to play great organs.. they built great instruments in those big cathedrals, but not everybody could play them... one of JS Bach's teachers.

This quotes a lot of familiar music. The premise is that Pachelbel called it the Cannon in Dee because "dee dee dee dee" was the best he could do for lyrics.
